Frequently Asked Questions Regarding CBCF Scholarships

How do I apply for a CBCF Scholarship?
CBCF offers a variety of scholarships to provide resources for a range educational opportunities including vocational schools and two and four-year universities.  The following list of scholarships on the next page utilize the Common Scholarship Application, which allows you to apply for several different scholarships using one application and submitting one set of application materials.  All Common Scholarships require an application, letters of reference/recommendation; transcript of grades including class rank; SAT and/or ACT scores and a personal statement.  Please see the following page for scholarships that do NOT require the Common Application.

How are eligibility requirements determined?
Scholarships are available through CBCF thanks to the generosity of donors who have established scholarship funds.  Each donor establishes the eligibility criteria of his or her scholarship.  Scholarships may focus on academic achievement, academic potential, community service or financial need.

What if I am not a “straight A” student?
CBCF offers scholarships for a variety of students; while academic performance is important to the scholarship advisory committees, it is not the only criteria for scholarship applicants.

What if I am not sure where I will be going to school?
If you are unsure, you should indicate your first and second choice.  Once you have made your final decision, please notify CBCF.

May I apply for more than one scholarship?
Yes, so long as you meet the criteria for each scholarship to which you are applying.  Please apply for only those scholarships for which you are eligible.  On the common application, simply check all the scholarships for which you qualify on page 1.

How much will I receive if I am selected as a recipient?
Awards for each scholarship vary depending upon the criteria.  Scholarships range from $100 to up to $5,000, with the average award being $1,000.  Please see specific scholarship information for award amount.

Do I receive a check if I am awarded a scholarship?
No. All scholarship checks are made payable to your school and go directly to your school’s financial aid or scholarship office. There is no exception to this rule. Checks are sent to schools in early August upon receipt of necessary paperwork and other verification requirements provided by you or the school.

Are scholarships taxable?
For degree-seeking students who use the scholarship for tuition, fees, books and required supplies, the scholarship is not taxable. CBCF recommends that you and/or your parents consult a tax expert or your school’s financial aid office for advice if you have any questions.

If I receive a scholarship one year, will I automatically receive it the following year?
No. While a few scholarships are renewable, most are one-time only.  Each scholarship varies; please check scholarship specifics.

Does the Coastal Bend Community Foundation make the decisions about who is awarded?
A Scholarship Committee comprised of CBCF Board members reviews and recommends applicants for all scholarships using the Common Application.  The Committee then forwards all award recommendations to the full Board of Directors for their approval.  Please see our website for detailed information on scholarships NOT using the Common Application.

Will my personal information be shared?
Your application information will not be shared with anyone except Community Foundation staff, the Scholarship Committee and the Board of Directors.

When will I be notified?
All successful applicants are notified in writing of the status of their application by the middle of May. Additionally, we will print the names of successful applicants for each scholarship on the website.
