In memory of James Ed (Jay) Downes, an Alice businessman and civic leader. Mr. Downes founded and served as chief executive of Energy Dynamics, an oilfield equipment and service provider in the domestic and international markets. He was named 1995 Citizen of the Year by the Alice Chamber of Commerce and is a member of its Hall of Honor. He served on the Alice Industrial Foundation Board, the Alice/Jim Wells County Transportation Committee and served as president of the Jim Wells County Master Planners Association in 1993-1994. Jay was an avid golfer and understood the value of a university education. He died unexpectedly in 2000.

Eligibility:
Applicants must:
be a graduating Alice High School senior;
letter in the UIL-sanctioned sport of golf at least two years;
have an overall high school GPA of “B” or better;
have participated in extracurricular activities other than athletics;
exemplify the high ideals and spirit of good conduct and sportsmanship benefiting a “Fighting Alice Coyote;”
attend a four-year college or university,
register for at least 12 hours of classes; and;
maintain a minumum college GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Application:
Students must be nominated by the athletic director and head golf coach at Alice High School. A scholarship committee will select the recipients.
