Purpose: Capt. Flynn, a native of South Dakota, was a respected and loved lawyer in Corpus Christi. He served in the judicial corps of the U.S. Navy for 32 years, the last four as a military judge in Corpus Christi, retiring with the rank of captain. He subsequently served as an assistant district attorney and as a municipal judge. After several years in private practice with Robert Blackmon, he again served as assistant district attorney. After his retirement, he was an active volunteer. Barney Flynn was a freshman at Richard King High School in Corpus Christi. He attained the rank of Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do and played clarinet in the King High School Marching Band. Capt. Flynn and his son, Barney, were killed in a tragic automobile accident on June 11, 1991. Selection is based on merit and financial need.

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • be a graduating senior at a Corpus Christi high school;
  • be a member of an NROTC program;
  • attend Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi or Del Mar College;
  • attend school full time (12 semester hours or more), and;
  • maintain a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
